Higgins Lake

Higgins Lake, located in the heart of Roscommon County, northern Michigan, is a photographer’s dream destination. The lake’s incredibly clear water, with visibility of up to 20+ feet, creates a unique canvas for capturing stunning images. As a longtime cabin owner, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing the ever-changing beauty of Higgins Lake, and I’m excited to share my favorite photography spots and tips with you.

From the moment the sun rises over the lake, the light dances across the water, creating a kaleidoscope of colors and textures. The warm tones of sunrise are perfect for capturing the serene atmosphere of the lake, while the soft light of sunset brings out the vibrant hues of the surrounding foliage. Whether you’re a seasoned photographer or just starting out, Higgins Lake offers endless opportunities to capture breathtaking images.

One of the most striking features of Higgins Lake is its crystal-clear water. The lake’s clarity allows you to see deep into its depths, making it an ideal spot for capturing underwater photos or simply snapping a picture of the lake’s floor. The surrounding landscape, with its lush forests and rolling hills, provides a picturesque backdrop for your photos.

Each season brings its own unique charm to Higgins Lake. In the spring, the lake is surrounded by blooming flowers and greenery, while summer brings warm weather and long days perfect for swimming, kayaking, or paddleboarding. Autumn is a photographer’s favorite time of year, with the fall color season painting the landscape with vibrant hues of orange, red, and yellow. Winter, with its snow-covered trees and frozen lake, offers a serene and peaceful atmosphere, perfect for capturing stunning winter landscapes.

Some of my favorite photography spots around Higgins Lake include the North Higgins Lake State Park, which offers stunning views of the lake and surrounding landscape, and the South Higgins Lake State Park, which provides access to the lake’s shoreline and surrounding forests. The nearby Winter-Chard Lake Forest Chalet, a cozy rental property on the lake, is also a great spot to capture photos of the lake and its surroundings.

Whether you’re looking to capture the beauty of Higgins Lake’s landscape, wildlife, or seasonal changes, this stunning lake in northern Michigan has something to offer every photographer.
